Wilbur Smith
I was born of British stock on January 9, 1933 in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, in Central Africa. As an infant of eighteen months I was struck down by cerebral malaria, delirious for ten days. The doctors told my parents that it was probably better if I died, because if I survived I would be brain damaged. Despite the primitive medical facilities available in Africa in those days, their prognosis proved correct; I survived and am now only mildly crazy. Which is good because you have to be at least slightly crazy to write fiction for a living.

Alastair Sawday
Publishing beautiful books is only the most recent of Alastair’s endeavours: in the past he has led tours all over France, guided disaster relief teams in Turkey, worked for the VSO in Papua New Guinea, and any number of other exotic things – all pursued with the same intelligence and exuberance he demonstrates as a publisher.

Alma Books Ltd
Alma Books was set up in October 2005 by Alessandro Gallenzi and Elisabetta Minervini, the founders of Hesperus Press. Publishing from fifteen to twenty titles a year, mainly in the field of contemporary literary fiction, Alma takes around sixty per cent of its titles from English-language originals, while the rest are translations from other languages such as French, Spanish, Italian, German and Japanese. Alma also publishes two or three non-fiction titles each year.
